A Message from Mrs. Rojas

Dear 5th Grade Parents:

We are getting close to our 5th grade dance show, “Dancing through the Decades.” The show will take place on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. It will feature music from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.

We have been discussing costumes, and I have attached some ideas below. The attached link are just ideas to go off of. These are not a required costume to purchase. All students must wear pants that are comfortable to move in. They can be jeggings, jeans, jazz pants, black sweats, or athletic bottoms that go past the knee.

Most pieces can be pulled from your child’s wardrobe they currently have. All footwear must also be comfortable to move in, nothing heavy or bulky. Students can wear tennis shoes. For students who are in dance outside of school, they can wear their jazz shoes.

Moliver's Class Costumes (80’s):
· 80’s workout gear. Can have bright colored shirts without writing or prints. Leggings, pants shorts and tights are all acceptable.
· Accessories can be leg warmers, sweat bands, high knee socks
· Footloose

We are all so excited for the 5th grade performance, and everyone is showing great enthusiasm and commitment. Hope to see you at the show!

Best,
Arielle Rojas

Week 15

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with those you love! 2018 is sure to hold lots of good times for our class - I know I am excited to learn more about this awesome bunch of 5th graders.

A few reminders:
  • We will begin outlining our exhibition papers this week. Each student will be logging on, and using their own google (school based) accounts to share and edit documents with group members and myself. This means that work on this project, even as a group, can continue from home.
  • No school on Monday, 1/15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day
  • Report cards go home in Tuesday folders on 1/16
  • Mark your calendar! The 5th grade dance show, “Dancing through the Decades,” will take place Feb. 15 at 6:30pm. More info from Mrs. Rojas is to follow in the next blog post.
Math: Input/output functions. Students will identify a “rule” or “function” based on either additive or multiplicative patterns, then create linear graphs based on the information from those rules.
ELA: We will be working with synonyms and beginning our fantasy unit (fairy tales, fables, myths, tall tales). Students will take a look at commonly known fantasy stories and compare the different versions from cultures around the world.
Spelling & Quizlet quizzes will take place on Friday, 1/12.

Science: Earth science – the rock cycle and constructive vs destructive landforms
Study Jams - Go to “Landforms, Rocks, & Minerals,” watch the “Weathering & Erosion” and “Landforms” video. For fun - Bill Nye erosion episodeQuiz over weathering, erosion, and deposition on Thursday, 1/11

Hello Parents

Although I would love to be there meeting with you, I know your kids are in great hands and I look forward to returning to the classroom soon!

My husband and I welcomed our daughter, Rachel, on September 1st. She is a healthy, happy, 7 pound, 21 inch long baby, that has stolen the heart of her parents and dog “sisters.”  It has been such a joy taking on this new role as “mom!” We are all tired, but happier than ever!

A few items I would like to share with you about our classroom structure and expectations are listed below. By now, your students are becoming comfortable with these 5th grade routines, please contact Ms. Langerud if you have any questions or concerns.

Blog:
My blog, http://moliver5th.blogspot.com/ will be out of use until I return from maternity leave, however, you may access relevant information about our class from the blogs of Ms. Berens, Ms. Bahr, and Ms. Bryant:

ELA:
Class read alouds and daily 4 rotations comprise the foundation of reading and writing instruction.
  • Read to Self - This is exactly what it sounds like! Students may find a comfortable spot around the classroom and read silently to themselves. It is usually recommended that they use this time to read their book club book, but if they are “caught up” they may read a book of their choice.
  • Book Club Meeting - Leveled groups will read, discuss, and complete jobs based on assigned pages (on bookmark)
    • Book Club Expectations:
      • Students may not read ahead or fall behind on their pages. This ensures that everyone has an equal opportunity to discuss
      • Jobs must be completed in book club journal each day and students must come prepared to discuss their thoughts about the book and their role for that day:
        • Discussion Director
        • Story Summarizer
        • Creative Connector
        • Artistic Artist
        • Passage Predictor
        • Word Wizard
  • Word Work - Spelling and quizlet practice, quizzes each Friday
  • Writing Work - Social Studies notetaking, reflections journal work, grammar assignments

Math:
  • Each Monday, students receive a “Problem of the Day,” “Number of the Day,” and “Exit Ticket” to be worked on and checked throughout the week
    • Problem of the Day - word problem that connects with current lessons (and/or is a spiral review). Each day students should complete one problem independently (Mon.-Thurs.) and then as a class we go over solving strategies and correct answer(s). All students are responsible for showing their thinking and if a mistake is made, they must make corrections. These questions are inserted into the math folder and remain there week by week as reference tools.
    • Exit Ticket - another word problem, very similar to POD, and used as extra practice
    • Number of the Day - computation skills practice
  • “STAR” Format for showing mathematical thinking- State what you know, Turn it into an equation, Answer, Check for Reasonableness
  • Each Friday a 4 problem POD quiz is given that directly reflects the questions worked on throughout the week. Since 4 questions means each is worth 25 points, I encourage students to show their work in “STAR” form. This allows me to give partial credit for incorrect answers based on the thinking shown.

Correct and Return:
Since graded papers go home on Tuesdays, any assignments that earned less than 70% (and marked with “C/R by ____ date”) can be corrected by that same Friday for up to a 70%. Those assignments must be turned into the C/R tray by 3pm on Friday. This is the students’ responsibility. Students must show what caused them to make a mistake the first time. For math, this means reworking the problem in a different color or on a separate sheet of paper. For ELA, Science, SS, this means making corrections in complete sentence form. Students should NEVER erase their original work.

About Mrs. Moliver & Ms. Langerud

Hello 5th Grade Families!

As we prepare for a fantastic fifth grade year, I would like to take a moment to not only introduce myself, but also my long term substitute teacher.

My name is Anne Moliver and I have been teaching for the past seven years, last year being my first at Roberts. I was so grateful for the warm welcome I received, and the unforgettable learning experiences shared with my students at this outstanding school. I look forward to even more growth and exciting adventures ahead with your students.

As you may know, my husband and I are expecting our first child in the coming days. This means that I will be taking some time with my new baby at home, but will return to the classroom after my maternity leave. Ms. Epps and I are happy to announce that an excellent substitute teacher will be stepping in during my absence, and we have been collaborating to ensure that every student's needs are met.

Kristen Langerud is a recent English graduate from Texas A&M University. She is currently completing her teaching certification and is thrilled to be working with your kids this semester. Ms. Langerud hopes to one day be able to teach English abroad and experience everyday life in a different culture.

Ms. Langerud will be your primary contact while I am away. Her email address, kristen.langerud@houstonisd.org, will be active within the next week. In addition, our class blog will temporarily be out of use, but all academic information and reminders can be found on the other fifth grade teachers' class websites:

We can’t wait to begin a great school year and build strong relationships with you and your student!

Sincerely,

Anne Moliver
