English/Language Arts/Reading:

Book Clubs! We started our first book for book club this week. Each student was assigned a novel with their group, and we plotted out a reading schedule on their green bookmarks. It is imperative that all group members read to the exact page assigned (no reading ahead or falling behind), come with their job completed in their book club notebook, and are ready to engage in conversation each day. The book club notebook has a blue paper glued in with an explanation of each job and its requirements, there is also a white rubric with expectations for the daily meetings.

Within our read aloud novel, Chains, we will focus on honing our summarization skills and use exercises to target and describe the most important events as they come about.

Colonial America. We will learn about why each of the 13 colonies were settled and what economic strengths each colony had.

Science:

We are beginning our unit on matter and its properties…. what matter is, what it isn't, the main states of matter, and changes in states. StudyJams has some great videos to review. You will see scrolling topics under science, click on matter. The three videos I suggest are: “Properties of Matter,” “Solids Liquids Gases,” and “Physical and Chemical Changes in Matter.”

Social Studies:

We are continuing our unit on early explorers and also covering essential map skills, which despite technological advances, is good for all to know! Our explorer/colonist essay will be due on Wednesday. As a reminder, you are writing home to your king or queen (Spain, England, or France) and explaining the details of your voyage, and what you’ve encountered since arriving in this “new world.” Please display your knowledge this time period and of the 3 F’s or 3 G’s of exploration. Be as creative in your final product as possible, this is our first display project of the year!

• Our weekly problem solving quiz will take place on Fridays. Students took their first “practice quiz” last week, but going forward, these will be graded. The weekly quizzes directly reflect the “problem of the day”  and “exit ticket” questions we practice M-Th. 

English Language Arts (ELA):

Welcome to fifth grade!

I am so excited to have you in my class. Thank you to all who attended “meet the teacher,” I enjoyed seeing so many smiling faces!

Rainy Day Dismissal: During times of inclement weather, parent walk-up students are dismissed from inside the building in designated locations. Fifth graders will be waiting outside of my classroom

Week 33

It’s the final countdown! This week will be all about preparing for the Social Studies final exam and Exhibition night!

• Social Studies Final Exam - Tuesday, May 22
• Notebooks, newspapers, review packets, and relevant Crash Course American History, and Brain Pop Social Studies videos are excellent tools to help prepare
• Exhibition Night - May 24 from 6:30 – 7:45pm
• We ask that students arrive at 6:15pm and report to our classroom for set up instructions
• Professional attire (slacks, collared/button-down shirt, dress shoes)
• Flag Ceremony - Friday, May 25 at 7:30am
• Memorial Day - no school on Monday, May 28
• 5th grade Promotion at Pershing – Tuesday, May 29th at 6pm
• Students should arrive at 5:45pm and meet in the hallway to the right of the auditorium. Professional attire required.
• University of Houston 5th grade trip - Wednesday, May 30
• Look for permission slips going home this week!

Science: Monday and Tuesday we will continue our cumulative review leading to our science STAAR on Wednesday. (More) Science Review Terms, science notebooks, textbooks, and previously linked videos are excellent study resources. The most important thing is to get a good night’s sleep, and a healthy breakfast in the morning!

Social Studies: We will also continue to review for our end of year Social Studies exam. Here is a link to some very important terms: Social Studies Review. Notebook notes, newspapers, and review materials from last week and this week in the S.S. folder are great resources for studying as well.

Exhibition: This week we are putting the finishing touches on our trifold boards and practicing our presentations. We are so fortunate to have Lanier’s debate team join us this Thursday to practice presentation skills! Finalized scripts should be memorized by May 21st.

Reading: This week we will conclude our final book club books. "Shortcut" book reports will be assigned towards the end of the week. Spelling and Quizlet on Friday
