Week 22

Reminders:
  • Exhibition art mentors will continue to work with us on Monday & Tuesday afternoon. Any incomplete projects after that point will need to be worked on outside of class.
  • Math Benchmark Test - Wednesday, 2/1
  • Reading Benchmark Test - Thursday, 2/2
  • Science Benchmark Test - Friday, 2/3
These assessments will provide valuable data as we head into an important part of the school year. Please ensure that your child gets a good night sleep, as well as a healthy breakfast and snack throughout the week. Notebooks and folders are an excellent tool to review some of the objectives that we covered earlier this year.

Math:  Stem and Leaf Plots and Scatter Plots (Go Math lessons 16.1-16.2)
We will not be having our regularly scheduled P.O.D. quiz this week, but will instead have a quiz over graphing on Friday. This will include frequency tables, bar graphs, stem and leaf, dot, and scatter plots. Links in older posts would be excellent reviews (and as always, the math notebook!)

Reading:  Character traits study within Chains, our class read aloud, and our book club novels. Grammar skills: adverbs and prepositions.

Week 21

Reminders:

  • EXHIBITION: On Monday, students will begin creating their art products each afternoon. We will have mentors to guide and support them, although your child will be responsible for all materials needed for the product they have chosen. We ask that they come to school prepared (with necessary supplies) to begin constructing their artform on Monday so that no valuable time is wasted. Thanks for your support!
  • EARLY DISMISSAL on Wednesday, 1/25
  • DLAs (Practice STAAR Test) coming up 1/31 (Math), 2/2 (Reading), ⅔ (Science)

Math: Stem and leaf plots, frequency tables, bar graphs, and dot plots (4th grade objectives, but we include decimals and fractions in their data sets). Do you remember how to order and organize decimals and fractions? (The math journal is a great resource to review!)

Reading: We are beginning book clubs again! Yay!!! We will be focusing on character traits and how characters develop throughout a novel. Students will be assigned their book on Monday, and will be given daily reading expectations (and no reading ahead!) so that a meaningful discussions can be had with all group members.

Science:  Earth Science test on Friday (W-E-D, rock cycle, weather vs. climate, soil, landforms, water cycle) Students have all the notes they need for studying in their science journal, and we will review throughout the week.

Week 20



Reminders:
  • No school on Monday (1/16) in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Exhibition: We will begin art rotations on Tuesday. These are designed to help your child choose the form(s) of art they want to create as their product. Starting the following week, students will work with mentors and create the products each afternoon. Your child will be responsible for providing all materials needed for their particular art form. Please talk with your child about their interests for this portion of the project and keep necessary materials in mind when planning a trip to the store. Thanks as always for your support!

Math:
We will continue from Friday’s lesson with graphing input/output tables. Week 19

Reminder: You may have received an email from 5th grade parents seeking baby photos for the end of the year graduation ceremony. Math: Equations with adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying. Go Math lessons 8.1-8.4. On Friday, we will begin input/output functions in which students identify a Rule or Function based on either additive or multiplicative patterns. Students will then create linear graphs based on those rules that they identify. See links to tutorial videos: Create a Rule from a Table & Create a Graph from a Rule
ELA: Fantasy Unit - we will continue our “Passport Projects,” and students are welcome to bring in a fairy tale, fable, myth, legend, folklore, or legend to work with. Spelling Test and Quizlet this Friday (last week’s lists)
Science: Earth Science - Agents of weathering, erosion, deposition and the the landforms found as a result (constructive vs. destructive landforms).

Happy New Year! I hope your holiday was spent doing what you love, with those you love. Thank you so much for the thoughtful gifts and kind words, they meant a lot coming from such sweet families. I am looking forward to a fantastic 2017 with you all!!!

Math: Area, Perimeter, and Volume
Wednesday: Area of triangles and parallelograms
Thursday: Review for Test
Friday: Test on Area and Volume of 2D Shapes

Reading: We will be beginning our Fantasy Unit (Fairy Tales, Fables, Myths) We will be learning about fairy tales from around the world and how different cultures portray the stories we grew up with, differently. Students will create a passport book summarizing the different fairy tales they read.
Spelling Test and Quizlet quizzes on Friday, 1/13 (following week)

Science: We will be beginning our Unit on Earth Science
